AMBUCS Scholars- Scholarships
for Therapists
AMBUCS delegates at the 1948 national convention adopted a program
to help children with cerebral palsy. As time passed members decided they
wanted to broaden their scope of helping people. A program was born in
1955 to distribute scholarships to therapy students. Since inception over
$6,000,000 has been given to more than 12,000 students. For more information
visit the Scholars page.
AmBility
AMBUCS delegates at their national convention approved this program
in July 1998. A combination of the words AMBUCS and mobility, AmBility
signifies an expansion of AMBUCS charitable efforts. Now in addition
to the AMBUCS Scholars Program, chapters are able to direct Living
Endowment dollars to AmBility as well. AmBility includes the following
projects:
AmTryke®
Project
In
1990, a physical therapist asked an AMBUCS chapter if they could
provide a tricycle for children with disabilities to build self-esteem,
assist with muscle development, and help children experience the fun
of riding. The Longview, TX, chapter of AMBUCS took the challenge
and the AmTryke® therapeutic tricycle
was born. Chapter members hand built each tryke until National AMBUCS,
Inc. took over the responsibility and established AmTryke®, Inc.
in 1994. A bicycle company now manufactures them and to date almost
5000 tyrkes have been distributed.
Ramp
Building
Building
ramps to create handicap-accessible homes and businesses is another
project which AMBUCS chapters hold close to their hearts.
A brand new ramp building guide
is now available for members. The guide provides extensive information
and instructions to build safe, top-quality wheelchair ramps.
The
ASK ® Project
What
started as a community service project of the Sooner AMBUCS in
Norman, OK, ASK has drawn the attention of AMBUCS members in chapters
across the country. ASK
is a program through which donated computers and parts are refurbished
and made ready for distribution to people with disabilities. The
program is popular in Oklahoma and becoming popular is other areas because
it helps to "provide independence for people with disabilities"
in a very unique way. Be sure to read more about ASK
and how your club can become active in the project or how to donate
equipment.
Universally
Accessible Playgrounds
Building and refurbishing playgrounds that
can be used by children regardless of disabilities is becoming an increasingly
popular project among AMBUCS chapters. Whether it is adding universal
usage playground equipment or building all-new playgrounds, members
are acknowledging how important these playgrounds are.
Before
the Fall
What started as a program of one chapter
in Florida, Before the Fall has grown to a program many chapters participate
in. Before
the Fall is a fall prevention, bathroom safety program. Chapter members
go into the home of at-risk individuals and install grab bars, shower
seats, and other items that will make their bathrooms safer.
Services
to Youth
National AMBUCS, Inc. has chapter-sponsored Youth
Auxiliaries who work hand in hand with chapter members on service
and fund-raising projects. This gives the students first-hand knowledge
of the joys and frustrations, too, of learning to appreciate one's own
life and learning to be selfless when helping others.
