Erika's Story
Erika is young adult women with cerebral palsy.
She is most affected in her legs. Not long ago, Erika won an AmTryke at a recent UCP conference and received a 2700 model AmTryke. It was a single speed, and she rode it all around her home in Washington, DC.
Erika explained that her range when walking was about three city blocks. That was how far she could walk and make the return journey home. Once she received her bike, however, her roaming extended to twelve city blocks.
“It opened up this whole part of the city to me,” she said. “Everyone would stop me and ask where I got my trike.”
After her husband was transferred to Charlotte, Erika was recruited to be an AmTryke test rider. She received a new AmTryke, which was the same one size as her previous model but featured seven (7) speeds and a coaster brake.
After her critique of the new tricycle, she was given a new trike customized for her needs. Her new AmTryke features 7-speeds, free wheeling hub, and a single hand brake that controls both front and rear brakes.
Erika loves her new AmTryke and coined a new term for AmTryke she calls “trogging”. That’s when she and her husband exercise together. Erika rides her trike while her husband jogs alongside.
What a great gift of freedom and mobility!
